The Windthorst Trojans raced past the Henrietta Bearcats 30-22 in their season opener. The Trojans opened the scoring on their second possession completing a 4 play, 96 yard drive. Cy Belcher scored on a three yard run giving Windthorst a 6-0 lead with 6:20 left in the opening quarter. The big play on the drive was an 80 yard catch and run by Awtry Blagg down to the Henrietta three-yard line.
Two possessions later, Big Blue completed a 49 yard drive that took 1:06 off the clock as Belcher connected with Blagg on a 31 yard scoring strike and a 12-0 lead with 1:03 left in the first quarter. Blagg finished the night with four catches for 116 yards.
The Big Blue Crew on defense stopped the Bearcats at the Trojan 25 yard line on the following possession. Three plays later Bryson Jackson collected the tunnel screen pass from Belcher and raced to the end zone untouched from 71 yards out for an 18-0 lead with 9:28 left in the quarter. Henrietta got on the board as they completed a 40 yard drive with six seconds left in the half making the score 18-6 at halftime.
Windthorst forced a punt on Henrietta’s first possession of the second half. Five plays later, facing second and 19 from their own 15 yard Jackson was again the recipient of a Belcher pass. He received a block from Andrew Scheffe at the point of contact, followed by a downfield block by Gage Gillispie before cutting across the field. He was escorted to the end zone by Blagg and Kyle Wolf to make the score 24-6 with 4:30 left in the third quarter. Belcher finished the night with 322 yards passing, while Jackson contributed 172 receiving yards on three catches.
The Bearcats made a late charge to cut the lead to 24-22 with 9:29 left in the game. In the fourth period the Trojans moved the ball from their 38 yard to the Bearcat 16, but the drive stalled with three minutes left in the game. Henrietta facing third and five from their 21 yard line was caught holding Trojan Adrian Larios pushing the Bearcats back 10 yards. Two plays later Ethan Belcher intercepted a Bearcat pass attempt to set up the Trojans at the Bearcat 21 yard line. The Trojans scored two plays later on a Cy Belcher 15 yard run.
Ethan Belcher lead the defensive charge with 16 tackles, while Haven Vieth and Tryston Harding were in on 11 stops each. Gillispie was in on 10 tackles and Kyle Wolf had a team high 8 solo tackles. The Trojans continue their 2019 campaign as they travel to Jacksboro to face the 1-0 Tigers.
