A scam operation fraudulently using the name of a local elected official was brought to the attention of authorities when a woman recently became a victim of the offenders. She received a phone call from someone claiming to be an Archer County Sheriff Deputy. The impostor told her that she failed to appear for a Federal Jury Summons and must pay a fine immediately. They gave her instructions to purchase 4 Green Dot Prepaid Debit Cards totaling almost $2000. After she purchased the cards, she was instructed to give the caller the numbers from the cards and then cut them up and mail the pieces to the Archer County Clerk, Lori Rutledge at 100 S. Center in Archer City. The suspects kept the victim on the phone throughout the ordeal to ensure she followed their instructions.

Please be aware that these people use just enough legitimate information to ensnare vulnerable people in their schemes. Lori Rutledge is the Archer County District Clerk and has nothing to do with the Federal courts, but the average citizen may not be aware of that. The District Clerk’s office will never call to solicit money from anyone. If you receive a similar call, hang up immediately and notify the authorities.
