Archer City needed a 10-1 run in the decisive fifth set to snap a four-match losing streak and claim a 3-2 (19-25, 23-25, 25-15, 25-19, 15-10) victory over Hirschi on Tuesday, Sept. 8. The Lady Cats move to 5-4 on the year.
After dropping the first two sets, Archer City was in need of any momentum to try and salvage the match. The pendulum swung back in the Lady Cats’ favor midway through the third and the team never looked back. Leading 15-10, junior Bailey Grant ripped a huge spike that sent the Huskies’ libero flying and turning the tide of the match.
Trailing 9-5 in the final set, the Lady Cats strung together a 6-0 run to take the lead for good. Sophomore Kadence Huffman dropped in a pair of aces in the final three points to clinch the comeback win.
Junior Mallory Maxwell turned in a standout performance, registering 11 kills, seven aces and four blocks to power the Lady Cats’ offense. Junior Maddie Lopez (18 assists, 13 digs, three aces) and sophomore Jill Liles (14 assists, 11 digs) each turned in double-doubles while junior Aspyn Huseman rolled up 16 digs.
The Lady Cats return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 15 for a rematch with the Lady Huskies in Wichita Falls. First serve at Hirschi is slated for 5 p.m.
