IOWA PARK – Conner Byrd, Archer City Wildcat senior pitcher, was on the mound as the starter for the Red Team last Thursday for the 2nd Annual Fellowship of Christian Athletes Champions for Christ All Star Game. Red Team Coach Terry Wolf, coaching many of his former players, left Byrd on the mound for three innings. It was a good start as Byrd allowed no runs and no hits with 4 strikeouts. Windthorst Trojan ace, Hunter Wolf pitched the fourth inning shutting out the Blue Team with a strikeout to his credit. Holliday Eagle infielder Jake Turner went to the mound for the fifth inning. Andrew Hawkins, a Burkburnett Bulldog, and Tyler Reeves, a Vernon Lion, closed out the sixth and seventh innings. As a committee they gave up only 2 runs on 4 hits, but though the pitching was very good the hitting was better.
The Red Team racked up 7 runs in the bottom of the third inning then tacked on another 7 in the bottom of the fourth. The final score was 14-2. Windthorst catcher, Sam McQuerry, had a run scoring single and a 2 RBI double in the two big innings. Hits and heads up base running by Wolf and Trojan utility player Colton Bates helped keep the two rallies going. Byrd hit 2 singles to drive in a pair of runs. Rider’s Jeremy Crouch, the Blue Team coach, was unable to rally his team to overcome 5 errors. Another Holliday Eagle, Chase Borchardt, was on the Blue team, but saw little action.
The Red Team had players from Archer City, Burkburnett, Jacksboro, Hirschi, Windthorst, Iowa Park, Vernon, Holliday, Rider, and Tioga. The Blue Team was composed of players from Bowie, Burkburnett, Graham, Nocona, Olney, Wichita Falls High School, Iowa Park, and Holliday.
