HOLLIDAY – The Holliday Eagles had a tune up for a Bi-District game last Friday night on their home turf, but they did not get much resistance. The S&S Consolidated (Sadler, Tx) Rams were unable to stop the Eagles and except for a couple of plays were unable to mount any serious offensive threat. The Eagles scored 14 points in each of the first two periods to take a halftime lead of 28-7. They tacked on another 27 in the second half for a final of 55-7 to finish District 5-3A competition. The win closes out the regular season for the Eagles now with a record of 7-3 overall and 4-2 in district.
The Eagles scored eight rushing touchdown by 7 different ball carriers. Senior place kicker Logan Whitling connected on 7 of 8 extra point attempts. Senior Gavin Price scored the first touchdown of the game on a 1 yard run. He gained 27 yards on 7 carries for the night. Another senior, Seth Atchley, scored the second touchdown for the Eagles on a 6 yard run. His game total was 34 yards on 4 carries. The score after the first period was 14-0.
Sophomore Tyler Ruddell rushed for 69 yards on 7 carries scoring early in the second quarter on a 1 yard run. Junior running back Crae Jackson got the fourth touchdown of the night on a three yard run to cap a 76 yard drive to put Holliday up 28-7 at halftime.
Sophomore running back Austin Jones was the leading rusher for the Eagles with 119 yards on 10 carries and a second half touchdown. Senior Mark Hardin had a touchdown in the second half to go along with freshman running back Jaxx Johnson’s two touchdowns. Johnson gained 67 yards on 8 carries. The Eagles amassed at total of 350 rushing yards for the night averaging 7.6 yards per carry. Continuously driving against the Ram defense the Eagles chalked up 30 first downs.
The Eagles resorted to the air only 9 times. Senior quarterback Kase Patterson connected on 6 of those attempts for a total of 115 yards. Tucker Strealy caught 2 passes for 69 yards and Cole Harrison caught 2 passes for 19 yards.
Cason Foster and Hardin each had 6 solo tackles and Ruddell intercepted a pass. Senior Preston Crutcher had 4 solo tackles. Except for the long touchdown pass by the Rams in the second period the swarming Eagle defense had the Rams pinned down most of the night. It was not the third shutout in a row, but one touchdown allowed in the last three games is a good indication of the Holliday’s defensive talent.
The Bi-District game in Ponder this Friday night at 7pm is a rematch of last year’s Bi-District matchup with the Dublin Lions the runner up in District 6-3A, Division II. Last year the Eagles beat the Lions 66-20, but Dublin now has a record of 8-2 having lost to Jacksboro and Albany earlier in the season. The winner of the Holliday vs Dublin game will most likely face the Palmer Bulldogs currently 10-0, the winner of District 7-3A and ranked 8th in the state by the Texas High School Coaches. Palmer meets the Hamilton Bulldogs in the Bi-District round.
