AUSTIN - The Windthorst Trojanettes got off to a shaky start against the Thorndale Lady Bulldogs in Texas State 2A Softball Semifinal at McCombs Field on Wednesday afternoon, May 29. Abby Brown hit a double in the top of the first. It was the only hit Thorndale’s pitcher, Riley White, allowed. She struck out 7 Trojanettes with only 2 walks.

Windthorst players seemed to have a case of nerves early in contest. They failed to execute throws and catches usually routine. Laynie Brown, completely out of character in the ring, issued 5 walks in the first inning. The disciplined Thorndale hitters were accustomed to hitting the ball in early innings throughout the playoffs. The Lady Bulldogs in the Quarterfinal round had also eliminated Shiner, last year’s State Champion. Facing a powerhouse team with a case of nerves was a recipe for disaster. With one out on a Claire Hemmi diving catch in shallow left field the Lady Bulldogs scored 8 runs in the bottom of the first. The line score in the bottom of the first inning for Thorndale was 8 runs on 5 hits with 2 errors and 2 left on base.

Laynie Brown after struggling in the first inning settled down to allow only 4 hits and 2 runs over the next 4 Thorndale at bats. She finishes the season with an impressive 27-6 record for the year. Take away the first inning and it was 2-0 in the last four frames. Unfortunately, after the shaky start a run in the bottom of the fifth ended the game on the run-rule 10-0. As juniors both Browns, catcher Abby and Laynie, will have a chance to repeat a trip to Austin next year. Should that happen they will take with them a great deal of experience.

The Thorndale Bulldogs lost to the Crawford Lady Pirates in the State Final 8-7 in 8 innings on Thursday.

The Trojanettes finish the year with a Regional Championship, a record of 32-7, and a State Semifinal appearance. The senior starters, Claire Hemmi, Mackenzie Gillispie, Blaire Schreiber, Grace Hoeggerand Robyn Pickel will leave big shoes to fill for their replacements next year. A lot of high school Class 2A softball teams all over Texas wished they had made it to the final four. Taking the whole 2019 softball campaign in review, despite the disappointing loss to Thorndale, it was a terrific season. Congratulations Windthorst Trojanettes.
