WINDTHORST - The Windthorst Trojans clinched the 2019 District 6-2A championship as they declawed the Electra Tigers 49-18 last Friday night. The Big Blue crew pounced on the Tigers from the get go. The defense forced a three and out on the opening possession of the game as the Tigers elected to punt on fourth and five from their 41 yard line. Cy Belcher opened the scoring ten plays later on a 12 yard read play. Belcher followed pulling right tackle Eduardo Llamas into the end zone to make the score 6-0 with 6:09 left in the first quarter.
Following an incomplete pass on an Electra fourth and three from the Windthorst 45, the Trojans got the ball back with 2:34 left in the first quarter. They went backwards though and faced fourth and 16. They sent in the punt team, but punter Bryson Jackson read the defense and realized they could not catch him as he hit his turbo button and sprinted 18 yards to pick up the first down. Four plays later Cy Belcher found Awtry Blagg for a 19 yard touchdown and a 12-0 lead with ten seconds left in the opening quarter. Blagg finished the night with five catches for 88 yards.
A 40 yard Tiger punt gave Windthorst the ball at their 17 yard line. The Trojans went through the Tiger defense like a hot knife through butter as they scored four plays later on Gavin Steinberger’s 18 yard touchdown reception from Cy Belcher. Max Owen kicked his first of five extra points for a 19-0 lead with 8:32 left in the game. Owen was perfect for the night.
Big Blue’s defense forced another three and out. On the ensuing punt Gage Gillispie turned on his jets and returned the punt 77 yards to the Tigers three yard line. He scored on the next play on the jet sweep pass for a 26-0 lead with 6:31 left in the half.
The Tigers got on the board by taking advantage of a short field. Their extra point kick never had a chance as it barely got a foot off the ground. The ball wound up in a scrum at the seven yard line. Trojan lineman Connor Cullar picked the ball up and sprinted toward the Tiger end zone. He received a great block from Ethan Belcher around midfield and Kyle Wolf cleaned up the last Electra Tiger with an angle at the 40. Cullar sprinted into the end zone from 93 yards out increasing the Trojan lead to 28-6 with 5:08 left in the half.
Electra came up with a defensive stop and took over at the Trojan 39 yard line. Facing fourth and nine from the 38, Electra’s “Hail Mary” pass was answered as the Tiger receiver came down with the wing and prayer pass and then scored to cut the lead to 28-12 with 2:35 left in the half.
Windthorst completed a five play, 62 yard drive as Bryson Jackson caught a two yard touchdown pass from Cy Belcher to give the Trojans a 35-12 halftime lead. Belcher finished the night with 260 yards passing with four completions for touchdowns.
Haven Vieth increased the lead to 42-12 with 5:10 left in the third quarter as he scored on a seven yard run to cap a seven play 63 yard drive. He had two carries for 18 yards, while Ethan Belcher led the Trojans in rushing with 77 yards on five carries. The Tigers cut the lead to 42-18 with 10:35 left in the game, but on the ensuing kickoff the Trojan coaches could not have drawn it up better. The blockers (Clay Hoff, Hunter Herndon, Tryston Harding, Andrew Scheffe, and Jacob Lindeman) executed blocks to perfection. Blagg split the red sea of Tiger defenders and went untouched 78 yards for a kickoff return touchdown. The touchdown return ended the scoring on Senior Night 2019. Seniors playing their last game at Trojan Field were Alberto Estrada, Awtry Blagg, Bryson Jackson, Chance Pennartz, Gage McAnally, Gavin Steinberger, Jacob Lindeman, and Tyler Etheredge. With the win, the Trojans move to 7-2 and 4-0 in district play. They end their regular season schedule Friday night in Petrolia to take on the 3-6, 1-3 Pirates.
