VERNON - The Windthorst Trojans’ 2019 campaign ended last Friday night in the Regional round of the Class 2A, Division 2, UIL Playoffs. They fell to the Wellington Skyrockets 44-14. The Skyrockets are ranked fourth in Class 2A, Division 2 in the Associated Press statewide polls with a 12-1 record. The Trojans struggled to get their offense clicking as they found themselves in a 20-0 hole with 3:28 left in the first half. Cy Belcher found Ethan Belcher for 22 yards and 15 yards, which sandwiched a completion to Kyle Wolf for 13 yards. Cy Belcher carried twice for nine yards setting up third and one from the Skyrocket 11. Awtry Blagg got the scoring honor on an 11-yard run and Cy Belcher completed a two point conversion pass to Bryson Jackson to make it 20-8 Skyrockets at the halftime break.
Wellington scored on the first play of the fourth quarter to increase their lead to 28-8. Three plays later Jackson hauled in a pass from Cy Belcher and sprinted past the defense for a 75 yard touchdown cutting the lead to 28-14 with 11:26 left in the game. Jackson finished the night with 96 yards receiving as Belcher passed for 167 yards. Ethan Belcher led the defensive charge in on 18 stops, while Gage Gillispie contributed 15 tackles.
I know the team motto was #Teamfirst but it would be an error to not highlight the talents of the main contributors. Cy Belcher finished the year with 3,031 yards passing. He set a new school record with 35 touchdown passes as Blagg and Jackson each finished the year with 11 touchdowns. Kyle Wolf scored seven as well. Cy Belcher tied the school record of 245 completions. Jackson led the Trojans with 64 receptions for 1,005 yards, Blagg had 59 catches for 806 yards, and Wolf had 52 grabs for 531 yards. Blagg ended his career with 151 catches, good enough for third on the Windthorst charts.
Ethan Belcher led all Trojan rushers with 566 yards, while Blagg contributed 300. Cy Belcher and Blagg both scored six touchdowns, while Ethan Belcher had five. Ethan Belcher led the defense with 133 tackles, Gillispie was in on 88 stops, and Jackson contributed 79. Jackson led the team with seven sacks while Blagg had four. Jackson also led the team in tackles for loss with 15, Haven Vieth had 12, Blagg 11 and Tryston Harding 10. Gavin Steinberger was the leading ball hawk with 5 interceptions. Gage Mcanally and Blagg both had two. Blagg also recovered the most fumbles with three. The Trojans closed the season with ten victories, their most since 2011.
