JACKSBORO - The Windthorst Trojans got defensive in a 34-12 victory over the Jacksboro Tigers last Friday night. The Tigers were held to 170 yards rushing after rushing for 394 yards the previous week. Gavin Steinberger and Andrew Scheffe collected interceptions, while Awtry Blagg recovered a fumble. The Tigers led 6-0 early in the second quarter and appeared to be on the move to increase the lead, but Ethan Belcher with a high jump blocked a 37 yard field goal attempt.

The Trojans took over at their 40-yard line. Five plays later, Haven Vieth scored from four yards out. Junior Trojan quarterback Cy Belcher found Bryson Jackson for the 2-point conversion to give the Trojans an 8-6 lead, a lead they would not surrender.

The Tigers with the next possession were forced to punt from their 45 yard line. The snap went over the punter’s head. Vieth tackled the punter at the Tiger 20 yard line. On the ensuing play, Belcher found Blagg open on the sideline. Blagg hurdled a defender at the goal line to get into the end zone to give the Trojans a 14-6 lead with 6:18 left in the first half. Blagg finished the evening with four catches for 49 yards.

The Big Blue Crew forced another punt which Gage Gillispie returned 21 yards to the Tiger 35 yard line with 3:20 left in the half. With six seconds remaining in the half, Jackson collected a fade pass from Cy Belcher in the corner of the end zone from three yards out. Blagg’s catch for the two point conversion put the Trojans up 22-6 at halftime.

Neither team was able to put any points on the board in the third period despite good field position for the Trojans at the 42 yard line. Gillispie tipped a Tiger pass intercepted by Scheffe. Late in the third period Jacksboro’s punt from the 14 yard line traveled only 16 yards to give the Trojans a first down at the Tiger 30 yard line.

The Trojans increased the lead to 28-6 early in the fourth period with 11:16 left in the contest. Cy Belcher connected with Jackson for a 15 yard score to complete a four play, 30 yard drive. Jackson led all Trojan receivers with seven grabs for 105 yards. The teams traded punts and the Tigers scored on a 19 yard quarterback scramble to cut the lead to 28-12 with 7:23 left in the game.

Jacksboro attempted an onside kick after their touchdown. Jackson was there to recover the attempt at the Trojan 44 yard line. Windthorst completed a 56 yard drive capped by a Belcher to Kyle Wolf eight yard pass completion. The point after attempt was no good to make the final score 34-12. Wolf finished with three catches for 28 yards. Cy Belcher passed for 188 yards and Ethan Belcher led Windthorst in rushing with 38 yards on six carries.

Vieth led all Trojan tacklers with 15 stops, including three tackles for loss, while Ethan Belcher contributed 12 tackles and Wolf was in on 11. With the win, the Trojans move to 2-0 on the season and will host the 1-1 Holliday Eagles Friday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 pm.
