The University Interscholastic League (UIL) announced its modified activity calendar for the 2020-21 school year and updated COVID-19 risk mitigation guidelines in a press release on Tuesday, July 21.
The good news for Archer City, Holliday and Windthorst ISD? The practice and game schedule for fall sports remains mostly unaffected. Football and volleyball practice opens on Monday, Aug. 3, for the Wildcats, Eagles and Trojans.
Volleyball can begin competition on Monday, Aug. 10, with cross country meets beginning on Monday, Aug. 17. Football games can start on Thursday, Au.27.
These guidelines are in addition to guidance issued by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and intended to be implemented along with TEA guidance, which applies to UIL academic activities and extracurricular non-UIL activities.
“Our goal in releasing this plan is to provide a path forward for Texas students and schools,” said UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt. “While understanding situations change and there will likely be interruptions that will require flexibility and patience, we are hopeful this plan allows students to participate in the education-based activities they love in a way that prioritizes safety and mitigates risk of COVID-19 spread.”
The UIL states it will continue to work with state officials and monitor CDC and other federal guidance to determine any potential modifications that may become necessary.
The organizations said districts can allow spectators to attend games or events with a maximum 50% capacity provided social distancing is enforced and masks are worn.
