ARCHER CITY – Last Friday night Archer City High School honored seniors and crowned a Football Sweetheart. After that the Wildcats went to work on the Ranger Bulldogs for a 53-6 victory, the second District 6-2A, Division 2, win in a row. The win extends the overall record for Archer City to 6-3 and 2-2 in district. The win captured a spot in the playoffs, but whether third or fourth in district will depend on the outcome of the matchup with the Electra Tigers this Friday night in Electra at 7pm. The winner this Friday night will face the loser of the Wellington Skyrocket vs Wheeler Mustangs matchup in District 5-2A also being played this Friday night.
The Wildcats racked up 47 points in the first half then cruised to a 53-6 victory. Sophomore quarterback Ty Bates threw three touchdown passes. The first a 14 yard completion to Kade Dagley and the next two to Keegan Beaver, a four yard reception in the first period and a 50 yard catch and run in the second period.. Bates was 15 of 23 passing for 276 yards. He scored twice on runs of 5 and 4 yards. He completed passes to seven different receivers. Callen McCasland caught four for 78 yards, Beaver caught 2 for 54 yards, Carter Hilbers caught 4 for 72 yards, and senior running back Morgan Mobley caught four for 58 yards. Mobley was the leading yardage gainer. He added 30 yards rushing for 88 yards on the night with a 6 yard touchdown run late in the first half. The Cats also got rushing touchdowns from freshman McKinnen Beaver and Justin Browning. Kannon Rice was 5 of 7 on extra-point kicks.
Senior defensive linebacker anchoring the Wildcat defense, Dylan Briggs was in on 21 tackles 10 of which were solos. Six of those tackles threw the Bulldogs for losses. He was credited with 2 sacks. Defensive linemen Breden Hulse, Jack Herring, and Chase Stafford combined for another 5 tackles for losses. Keegan Beaver got an interception, McCasland forced a fumble recovered by Layne Briggs.
The Wildcats have put up some impressive statistics so far this season. Bates has completed 120 of 222 passes for 1945 yards and 21 touchdowns. He has rushed for 14 touchdowns. Mobley is the rushing leader with 709 yards on 85 carries for 8 touchdowns. Keegan Beaver, Carter Hilbers, and Callen McCasland have had 535 yards, 437 yards, and 427 yards respectively, in receiving yardage. As the leading receivers they have combined for 14 scoring catches.
Dylan Briggs is credited with 179 tackles for the season. He is the heart of the Wildcat defense. Junior Jaxton Barrett has 98 tackles and Carter Hilbers has 80. As a team Archer City has forced 24 turnovers. Keegan Beaver, Layne Briggs and Dagley have each interception 2 passes. Both Hilbers and McCasland have recovered 3 fumbles each. McCasland has 72 yards in fumble recovery returns to his credit.
