The Archer County News was recently recognized with seven awards during the 2022 Texas Press Association’s Texas Better Newspaper Contest at the TPA Conference. Awards were presented at the TPA Convention and Trade Show in Round Rock on Saturday, June 3.

The Football Hero by Jim Black is the fictional tale of the 1968 high school football season told through the eyes of Robert Dale Hargrove, a young promising quarterback, hoping to earn a starting spot for the Penny Pirates. It’s a fictional story, but ex-high school football players in small town Texas will find plenty of realism in the pages of the book.

Raymond Melton Mills, 60, of Bowie, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, May 30. A celebration of life service will be hosted by his children from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, June 11 , in the Chapman Building at 116 W. Wise Street in Bowie. It will be a come-and-go memorial event. His children look forward to gathering with friends and family to remember their dad.

Longtime Eagles assistant moving on

It’s hard to imagine Holliday baseball without assistant Ryan Menasco. The Eagles’ longtime pitching coach elected to move on to the next chapter of his life in Littlefield where he will serve as a football and baseball assistant for the Wildcats.
