Ever since the Archer City Writers Workshop purchased the former Booked Up from Chip and Joanna Gaines in late October 2024, newspapers, television stations and magazines have produced a long string of stories about our plans to convert Booked Up into the Larry McMurtry Literary Center (LMLC). We’ve also received a flood of inquiries from Larry’s fandom in Texas and across the country asking when the LMLC will open its doors to the public.

Cheer up, that time has come. To give Larry’s fandom a preview of the former Booked Up before the building undergoes major repairs and renovations and to reduce our unmanageable inventory of books sitting on pallets inside the store, the LMLC is opening the showroom and front area of the former Booked Up to the public for a limited time.

On Saturday, March 8 and Sunday, March 9, the LMLC will be open between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. During our preview opening, we’re offering the public the opportunity to acquire one of Larry’s rare books in exchange for a $25 donation to our nonprofit literary center.

Since most of the books in Larry’s collection are marked by Larry’s pricing and, occasionally, his initials or comments, they are irreplaceable. That’s why we’re limiting the number of unique books each person can acquire from Larry’s collection to 10.

The LMLC plans to remain open on weekends through the end of March, after which we'll announce future openings. Please check the LMLC website for updates. https://www. lmcmurtrylitcenter.org/ The LMLC’s Preview Opening is sponsored by the Wichita Falls North Rotary Club. a vital service organization whose vision aligns with the LMLC: uniting people and taking action to create lasting change — in our communities and across the globe.
