Body

Richard Don Schlomach, M.D., of Alvord, formerly of Wichita Falls and Archer City, age 91, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jan. 29, 2026.

Richard was a husband, father, Sunday School teacher, church deacon, medical doctor, business owner, and rental property owner. With his clinic open six days a week during his 30-year (1961-1991) independent medical practice in Archer City, where he was often the only doctor in Archer County, Dr. Schlomach never missed a day that was not scheduled and announced well in advance. Even after a motorcycle accident on Sunday, July 4, 1976, in which he broke ribs, a scapula, and his clavicle, Doc was at his clinic on Monday, July 5. At the Archer County Hospital, Dr. Schlomach delivered babies, performed a variety of major surgeries, and responded to emergencies, minor and major. It was the rare weekend that medical matters didn’t call him to his clinic, the hospital, or the nursing home. He self-published a short autobiography titled Adventures of a Texas Country Doctor in 2016.

Despite his busy medical practice, and especially after his primary business involved upkeep of his rental property, Dr. Schlomach found time for adventure riding motorcycles, camping, sailing, traveling the United States (especially Colorado) by motorhome, and then traveling to other countries. He and Bonnie visited Ireland, England, France, Germany, Estonia, Moldova, Italy, the former Yugoslavia, Greece, Turkey (his favorite), Israel, Egypt, India, China, New Zealand, Peru, and, by himself, Argentina.

The oldest of three children, Dr. Schlomach was born in Burnet County, Texas May 14, 1934. By the age of 12, he mowed lawns and served as the church janitor in Edna, TX. It was during his father’s pastoral service in Edna that he met his wife of 66 years, Bonnie. After only three years matriculating at Baylor University in pre-med, Dr. Schlomach attended Baylor Medical School in Houston and then interned in Fort Worth at John Peter Smith Hospital. He began his independent practice at the age of 27.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife, Bonnie. He is survived by his sisters, Mary Lynn Beall and Betty Ruth Lindley of Burnet, his three sons Carlton and wife, Lisa, Haslet, TX, Byron and wife, Brenda, Piedmont, OK, and Clayton and wife, Wendy, Alvord, TX, eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Carlton and Byron wish to express their appreciation to their brother and sister-in-law, Clayton and Wendy, for the sacrificial care and attention given to their dad during the last several years of his life. The family thanks the staff of Solaris Hospice for their care and attention at the end.
