Dorothy Gresham Downing

Dorthy Gresham Downing, age 86, of Archer City, passed away Saturday evening, Sept. 17, 2022, at her residence surrounded by her children.

Services will be held at a later date. Cremation arrangements were under the direction of Aulds Funeral Home of Archer City. Dorthy was born May 12, 1936 in Olney, to the late Roy Gresham and Vera Cleo Johnson Gresham. She attended school in Olney.

On Oct. 31, 1951, she married Bobby Downing in Archer City. He preceded her I n death on Feb. 12, 1985.

Dorthy was a dispatcher and jailer for the Archer County Sheriff’s Department for a few years. Most of her lifetime, she spent as a caregiver to several families in the area. Dorthy enjoyed gardening and cooking. She was known for her chicken fried steak that she cooked for the Archer City Lion’s Club for many years.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda Gayle Croom of Archer City and Debra Gibson and husband, Jeff of Merritt Island, Florida; son, Bobby Downing of Graham; seven grandchildren, Winford Branch, Aleisha Tweed, Brad Downing, Tracie Parvin, Cody Downing, Bryan Berend and Misty Hunt; eight great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Larry Smith and wife, Jan of Midland and Danny Smith of North Carolina.

He was preceded in death brothers, Jimmy Gresham, Eddie Gresham, Gerald Smith and Royce Gresham and sister, Marvona Anderson.
