Lady Eagles' XC looking for another podium year

Reserve a spot on the Holliday High School lawn for another State Championship monument. The Lady Eagles Cross Country team brought home a gold medal in 2019 and a silver medal in 2020. Led by senior Hannah Spears, a fourth place individual finisher last year, the Lady Eagles have enough quality runners to take the top spot again in 2021.

The five finishers in last year’s state competition in Round Rock were Spears, Kayla Coheley, Bailee Bowers, Jaycee Lyons, and Simon Mouras. All are back along with a complement of other talented runners including Sarah Southard, Kassie Munguia, Kynzee Jackson, Jaci Shepherd, Briar Griffin and Breagan Blowers aiming to capture a spot on the podium.

Cross Country Coach Glenn Griffin said, “The girls are looking to continue the streak of District and Regional championships and returning to the top of the State podium. Individually we have multiple girls who have a chance at a podium finish at State.”

Cross Country runners compete as a team and as individuals. In both categories, the Lady Eagles have promising prospects.

Two sophomore boys, Cole Esparza and Evan Casey, make up a small team in the boys cross country competition.

Griffin explained the goal for the boys.

“Both guys will be striving for a top 10 finish at district to earn a trip to regionals,” Griffin said.

The Cross Country schedule opens up this Saturday at the Boyd Invitational. The District 7-3A Meet will be in Holliday on Oct. 11. The Region I meet will be in Lubbock on Monday, Oct. 25. The State Championships are scheduled for Old Settlers Park in Round Rock on Friday, Nov. 5.
