After finishing second in district the previous three years, Archer City Head Track and Field coach Donny Gray has his sights set on taking home a district crown.

“My ultimate goal is to compete for a district championship,” Gray said. “Seymour is loaded this year with a bunch of young kids. I think they are the leaders going into the clubhouse, but I think we can compete with anybody.”

The track coach said Mckinnen Beaver has a chance to reach the regional meet again in the 100 meter sprint. Beaver ran a time of 11.56 in the district 9/10-2A meet last year.

“I think he has a chance to do something really special in the 100 meter this year,” Gray said. “He is a lot stronger now and very motivated to get back to regional and if not further on.”

Beaver will also run a leg on the 4x200 and 4x400 relays. He will also be joined by Chance Warren, John Machtolff and another member to be named in the 4x400 relay. Beaver and Machtolff return to the relay team which finished third in district last year with a time of 1:37.60.

“We think our 4 by 400 relay has a great chance to go to at least regionals,” the track coach said. “We feel like that’s one of our stronger events once we get everybody healthy and in shape.”

Gray stated he believed Warren could make the regional meet in the high jump after he finished third in the district last year with a 5-4. Warren also advanced to the area meet in the 110 meter and 300-meter hurdle races.

“He is just so athletic and so long that he can do so many things,” Gray said.

The District 9-2A meet will be in Petrolia this year on Friday, April 8.
