Two Windthorst athletes punched their tickets to the state track and field meet following the UIL Region 2-2A Track & Field Championships on Friday, April 18 and Saturday, April 19. Seniors Nolan Schreiber (3200) and Gabby Hoegger (Discus).

For her final year as a Trojanette, senior discus thrower Gabby Hoegger is aiming to do grab the lone accomplishment that has been eluding her throughout her high school career, medaling at the state meet.

Hoegger’s previous two state finish include a fourth-place throw of 12311 in 2023 and a fifth-place throw of 131-5 in 2024. This year could be the year the dynamic discus thrower reaches the milestone.

Just one week after her throw of 144-03 at the area meet, Hoegger smashed her personal best and Windthorst school record with a toss of 149-3, over 17-3 more than the second- place throw. That throw ranks second in 2A after the conclusion of the regional meets this past weekend.

Accompanying Hoegger to state is senior distance Nolan Schreiber, who is making his debut state track appearance after he ran a 10:02.30 in the two mile. Schreiber’s third-place finish earned him the wild card spot, which means he had the fastest time after all the state-qualifiers.

Schreiber looks to end his Trojan legacy on a high note after already collecting numerous track and cross-country medals throughout his tenure.

For the fourth year in a row, Holliday head coach Glenn Griffin and his Lady Eagle track team swooped in and won the Region I-3A track and field championship at Elmer Gray Stadium in Abilene on Friday, April 18 and Saturday, April 19.

Collecting 94 team points and beating out the likes of Wall (77) and Shallowater (58), the Lady Eagles will be sending four individuals and two relays to the state track meet.

Sophomore Sarah Spears opened up the medal on Friday, picking up the silver and advancing to state in the 3200 after she ran a time of 11:42.33. Spears is making her debut in the 3200 at the state meet.

Junior Kenli Atwood unsurprisingly swept her two events, the 800 and the mile. With a time of 2:11.92 in the 800, she finished over five seconds faster than her next closest competitor. Her mile time of 5:01.86 was even further away, torching silver by over 10 seconds.

Senior sprinter Breagan Blowers once again will maker her return to the state meet after she posted a gold-medal time of 24.32. Blowers snagged a bronze last year at the state meet and aims to replicate and even improve her placement for her final time.

Both the 4x200 and the 4x400 relays advance after taking first. The 4x200 (Kai Stockton, Emma Ellis, Sammi Kirkland, Breagan Blowers) dashed to a time of 1:41.75, while the 4x400 (Emma Ellis, Kai Stockton, Sammi Kirkland, Kenli Atwood) record a 3:53.18.

Senior distance runner Anahi Machuca secured the wild card for the 3200, recording a 11:51.17, which was the best third-place time of all four regions.

Boys’ head coach Kory Atwood and his squad took home the silver in the team scores, collecting 86 points, almost doubling thirdplace Idalou. The Eagles are sending two individuals and the 4x400 relay to the state meet.

Predictably, both Noah and Ryder Strohman aced the 1600 and 3200, winning gold and silver in both races respectively. Noah Strohman also won gold in the 800 with a time of 1:53.74, advancing to state in that race for the second consecutive year.

The 4x400 relay snatched a silver with a 3:22.05.

The state meet will be held at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the University of Texas campus in Austin, and will take place from Thursday, May 1 to Saturday, May 3.
