Gov. Jimmy Allred became governor of Texas in a desperate time for Texas. The Great Depression created many hardships for families and crippled state finances. Though he had met with several defeats and reverses in his life, Allred’s persistence guided Texas in a difficult time and cemented lasting changes for the state.

The Sheriff’s Office received 145 calls for service this week. As this report is being written there were 15 inmates with four being female in the Archer County Jail.

Call For Prayer Two months ago a call for prayer for America, our community and our families was announced in the Archer County News. Place-Cowboy Church 201 W.

In the Gospel of Luke one of the disciples said to Jesus, “Lord, teach us to pray” (Luke 11:1b, New American Bible) and in the Sermon on the Mount Jesus said “This is how you are to pray.” (Matthew 6:9a, NAB). In this prayer Jesus gave us what many have seen to be 7Ps of prayer.

The Archer Public Library will be raising funds for our annual Summer Reading Program during Texoma Gives on September 9th. Texoma Gives is a full day of giving that provides critical funding for nonprofits in our area.

Many historians have called Stephen F. Austin the “father of Texas” for his efforts to bring the first settlers from the United States into Texas. But the story begins with his own father, businessman and visionary Moses Austin, who in his own way became the “grandfather of Texas.”

Ahhhh… September. The transition month. We often reach September while we are still baking in The Heat. Fall begins officially on the 22nd. By that time we usually moderate into some more comfortable temperatures and cold fronts bring dependable rain. Today (Sunday) and Monday upper 80’s to low 90’s (the “sweet spot” for warm season veg). Upper 90’s later this week with slim to none rain chances but at least no triple digits in the forecast. All of us are hoping fall will come early.
