OK, here’s the article where your Hometown Gardener is going to shoot himself right directly in the foot. Calendar spring occurs this week. Time to get busy and plant everything, right? Wrong… And in so many cases so very wrong. I’m going to break it down to you according to horticultural science. This is not my personal opinion but the opinion of all educated, cutting edge nurseries and landscape professionals in the southern states. Regular readers grow weary of me preaching this mantra all winter long. However, with spring in the air and some things blooming and pushing out new leaves, the general public is being bombarded by those with the marketing strategy and advertising budgets. Unfortunately this does include most family owned nurseries who do not possess huge advertising budgets but jump on the band wagon with the Megazons because it is lucrative.

The Louisiana Purchase of 1803 sparked a new wave of exploration in the United States as a number of expeditions were commissioned at the direction of President Thomas Jefferson to explore the new American frontier. The most famous of these expeditions was the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804-1806, which explored the Upper Missouri River Valley. Of the four major expeditions, one looked to explore the Red River Valley — to the frontiers of Texas -- but became the most disastrous of all.
