Many historians have called Stephen F. Austin the “father of Texas” for his efforts to bring the first settlers from the United States into Texas. But the story begins with his own father, businessman and visionary Moses Austin, who in his own way became the “grandfather of Texas.”

Ahhhh… September. The transition month. We often reach September while we are still baking in The Heat. Fall begins officially on the 22nd. By that time we usually moderate into some more comfortable temperatures and cold fronts bring dependable rain. Today (Sunday) and Monday upper 80’s to low 90’s (the “sweet spot” for warm season veg). Upper 90’s later this week with slim to none rain chances but at least no triple digits in the forecast. All of us are hoping fall will come early.

It happened to me this morning as I took my ritual Sunday soak in the tub. That grand epiphany that comes to most naturalists, when we get a tiny glimpse into how all things in Nature cooperate to survive, reproduce, and carry on the progeny. Plants, in particular, evolved to be eaten. Not only do they share their leaves and branches but many produce edible delicacies for mankind and our four legged cousins, also birds, bees, butterflies, and other insects… even fish. Fruits, nuts, and berries are specifically tailored to meet the needs of these various creatures on a seasonal basis. For example, nuts contain fats that help the consumers of nuts through the winter. Nuts mature in the fall… Perfect!!

Texas has long been a football state. One of the most successful Texas football dynasties, the Dallas Cowboys of the 1990s, stems from three players for the University of Arkansas and their 1964 championship season: Jerry Jones, Barry Switzer, and Jimmy Johnson.
