Lee Alfredo Villapondo, a suspect in the April 2020 murder of John Lewis Helms, died last week after he was released from the Archer County Jail Thursday, Sept. 16, on a personal recognizance bond.

The Archer County Commissioner’s Court voted to recognize and proclaim Oct. 3 through Oct. 9 as national 4-H week in Archer County during its meeting Monday, Sept. 27. The commissioners also voted to approve the flying of the 4-H flag under the Texas flag at the Archer County courthouse during National 4-H week.

Writers from across the country will gather in Archer City to pay tribute to one of its native sons and author Larry McMurtry who died March 25, in Tucson, Ariz. In addition to the literary tribute, the Royal Theater will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the release of The Last Picture Show, the Peter Bogdanovich film made from McMurtry’s third book, with an outdoor showing of the film.
