After dropping four straight matches and five of the last six, Archer City jumped back into the win column on Saturday, Sept. 11. The Lady Cats (16-10) overcame a slow start to defeat Christ Academy, 14- 25, 25-10, 25-15, 25-21.

Windthorst Head Coach Chris Tackett just wanted to give his Trojans a chance to play after a COVID-19 outbreak among the Archer City coaching staff forced the Wildcats to pull out of their annual rivalry game.

The Windthorst 7thgrade Spartans defeated the Alvord Bulldogs 28- 18 on Thursday, Sept. 9. Brock “Big Juicy” Belcher threw two touchdown passes to Adam Barton and Brayden Messineo. Hayden Cavazos added two touchdowns on the ground. The Spartans are now 1-0 on the season.

Holliday (3-0) ran all over Vernon (1-2) in a 36-7 win over the Lions on Friday, Sept. 10, at Leo Brittain Field.

Second-ranked Windthorst rolled up nearly 500 yards of total offense in a 49-0 rout of De Leon on the road on Friday, Sept. 3. The Trojans (2-0) host Archer City (1-0) in their home opener on Friday, Sept. 10.

The Holliday Lady Eagles (21-5) made quick work of its cross-county rivals, dispatching the Archer City Lady Cats (15-9) in three sets, 25-15, 25-14, 25-12, on Tuesday, Aug. 31, in Holliday.

The Windthorst Trojanettes (15-9) went on the road and picked up a pair of wins against Class 3A competition last week. Windthorst topped Henrietta in four (25-21, 25-16, 25-27, 25-22) on Tuesday, Aug. 31, and City View in three (25-15, 25-12, 25-22) on Saturday, Sept. 4.

What a difference a year makes. In two meetings last year, Eastland combined for 859 yards and 56 points on the Holliday defense.

Last Friday night in Haskell the Wildcats took most of the first quarter to get things going, but when they did the high flying spread offense racked up 27 points before halftime. Senior quarterback Ty Bates who left the game in the third period with an injury was 10 of 18 passing for 109 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Windthorst overcame five turnovers and held Henrietta to just three first downs in its 22-15 season-opening win on the road on Friday, Aug. 27.
